Living + Learning
Community
Market: Higher-Education
Location: Norfolk
Size: 8,500 SF
Year Completed: 2020
APPROACH
This living learning community houses student residences, faculty apartments, classrooms, a 2,250 SF flex/collaborative space, social, and meeting opportunities to create a one-stop-shop for on-campus residents. The interiors were crafted to evoke the New Energy of Norfolk, now a vibrant arts and culture hub in the downtown area. Interior environments are injected with life and color, creating an inspiring atmosphere for growth and education, with homey nods to Norfolk’s nautical ties.
The different spaces adjust to students’ ever-changing needs. They seek to alleviate the stress from increased academic demand by providing a homelike environment where students truly enjoy spending time. Soft, flexible furnishings, warm, layered lighting, and a variety of community hubs work to this end.
MEASURING OUTCOMES
Data and conversations with students found that residential environments integrated with a sense of belonging help reduce stress and promote productivity.
