Known as one of the city’s defining architectural achievements, Main Street Station has become a place for the Richmond community to come together.
Richmond’s iconic 1901 Main Street Station served as one of the primary rail hubs in the Mid-Atlantic region for over eighty years. The new Station Master Plan provides a vision for the revitalization of the entire site and its historic structures. The renovation of the historic train shed has allowed for more opportunities to engage the community, host events, and bring attention to the city of Richmond.

APPROACH
Reintroduction of passenger rail service at the platform level of the historic shed will return this national historic landmark to its role as Richmond’s premiere multi-modal transportation resource with access to high speed rail, light rail, taxi and bus routes, and provide pedestrian connections to the historic sites of Richmond’s Downtown. Planned ancillary uses include food markets, restaurants and cultural attractions. The adjacent Farmers’ Market will expand into the adjoining site to become a year-round regional market.
MEASURING OUTCOMES
In the years following the renovation of Main Street Station, the historic train shed has become a space for the community, hosting events of all kinds, including concerts, weddings, community gatherings. The station has also recently been named one of 21 most beautiful train stations in the country by MSN Travel, and has also been featured on a U.S. post stamp series highlighting architecturally significant structures.
